"Louis Spohr is surely one of the most unfairly neglected composers of the early 19th century. An influential and respected figure in his time, Spohr was an all-around musician: conductor, composer and violin virtuoso. Poised between Classicism and Romanticism, Spohr seems at one moment to echo Mozart, at another to prefigureBrahms, and often to resemble a slightly more earnest Mendelssohn.
The six CDs here collect the violin concertos, 16 in all, that Spohr wrote mostly as his own calling cards during his days as a touring soloist. All are attractive and well-wrought works, though naturally some stand out of the crowd. For example, the Concerto No. 6 features an unusual recitative-and-aria style slow movement and an infectious Spanish-flavored Polacca in conclusion. The opening theme of the 4th Concerto is unusually dramatic, while the 7th is perhaps the most satisfying all around, not least in its ravishing Adagio. Several works experiment with through-composed forms, notably the operatic single-movement Concerto no. 8 "In the Form of a Song-Scene."
Throughout, Ulf Hoelscher plays the intricate solo parts--many with extensive double-stopped passages--with an intimate understanding and facility that comes, no doubt, from studying each and every note that Spohr wrote for his instrument."
